You Are a Leader: The Identity God Already Gave You

Aug 24
What does the Bible actually say about your identity as a leader? Discover why leadership starts with who God says you are, not what you've done, at Rise Up Culture.
Have you ever looked in the mirror and wondered what God actually sees?

Not what you did yesterday, not what you're afraid people think, but what He says is true about you.

This week we're starting a new series called You Are a Leader, and we're beginning right where every good thing begins: with identity. Because before God ever asks you to lead anything, He already calls you one.

You Are What God Says You Are, Not What You've Done

If an apple tree never produced a single apple, would it still be an apple tree? Of course it would. Its identity was never up for debate, it was planted into what it is. The same is true for you. If God calls you an author and you never write the book, heaven still knows you as an author, because you are not what you did, you are what God put in you and declared over you. That is the question worth sitting with this week: if God stood up in front of a room and introduced you, what would He say? Not your job title, not your mistakes, not your resume. Warrior. Beloved. Chosen. Someone He delights in and has wonderful plans for. That is where leadership actually starts, not in what you accomplish, but in who you already are in Christ.

Salt, Light, and a City on a Hill

Jesus said it plainly in Matthew 5:13-14, you are the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Salt heals, preserves, and brings out flavor in the driest, most ordinary places, the meeting that shifts because you showed up prayed up, the friend who feels seen because you noticed them. Light is even bigger. Jesus wasn't just talking about lighting up a room, He used the word kosmos, meaning systems, culture, the way people think. You were never meant to just inspire people, you were made to help transform the world around you. And a city set on a hill cannot be hidden. You are not called to lead from a place of pride, you are called to lead high places with a low heart, visible because Heaven's light is shining through you, not because you are trying to be seen.

You Are Part of Something Built to Transform the World

In Ephesians 2:10 we learn we are God's workmanship, His poema, His masterpiece, and that identity always comes before destiny. He already prepared good works for you to walk in, you don't have to manufacture a calling, you just have to walk into the one already there. And when Jesus told Peter, on this rock I will build my church in Matthew 16:18, He used the word ekklesia, a governing assembly meant to shape culture, not hide from it. Church was never meant to be a bunker, it is a launchpad. If you are in Christ, you are a new creation, the old has passed away and the new has come (2 Corinthians 5:17), and just like the Spirit rushed on ordinary people in 1 Samuel 10, He wants to fill you again, turn you into who He already says you are, and use what is already in your hand.
