Freedom From Fear: How to Stop Letting Fear Decide Where You Go

Sep 30
How do you overcome fear and step into what God made you for? Discover why God's answer to fear is His presence, and how fixing your eyes on Jesus sets you free to follow Him.
Have you ever felt the pull of something God put in your heart, and then fear showed up right on time? You are not alone.

This week our NextGen Director, Lymaris Lovelord, took us into one honest question: How do I squash my fears and embrace what

God has made me for? The answer isn't trying harder to be brave. It's a Person.

Why Fear Gets So Loud

Fear gains power when we no longer feel safe. When things feel uncertain, out of our control, or bigger than us, fear starts acting like it gets the final say. But look at how God answers fear all through Scripture. He doesn't hand us a strategy first. He gives us His presence. "Fear not, for I am with you" (Isaiah 41:10). "The Lord your God is with you wherever you go" (Joshua 1:9). "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me" (Psalm 23:4). David said it simply: "When I am afraid, I put my trust in you" (Psalm 56:3). Fear doesn't leave because life calms down. It loses its grip when we remember who is with us.

Our Safety Is Jesus, Not Our Circumstances

Here's the shift that changes everything. Our safety was never meant to be found in our circumstances, our control, the right opportunity, the promise coming true, or even our calling itself. Our safety is Jesus. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). He is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end (Revelation 22:13), which means He is already standing in your future. You are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works He prepared ahead of time (Ephesians 2:10). God will show you what He made you for, the gifts He placed in you, and the places He is calling you into. And then comes the part fear hates most: you have to go.

Follow Jesus Into What He Made You For

David was anointed king as a young shepherd (1 Samuel 16), then spent years waiting. In a cave, with Saul right in front of him, his men said, "This is the day!" David could have grabbed the promise by force. Instead, he trusted the One who called him (1 Samuel 24). Peter, in a boat beaten by wind and waves, heard Jesus say one word: "Come." He stepped out and walked on water, and when his eyes went to the wind, he began to sink. Jesus reached out immediately (Matthew 14:22-33). And Hebrews 12:1-2 calls us to run our race looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith. We don't chase the calling, the promise, or even the miracle. We pursue Jesus, and as we follow Him, He leads us into everything He created us for.

A Simple Next Step

Fear does not get to decide where you go. If this stirred something in you, watch Lymaris's full message.

Taking It Home

Discipleship happens in the home, not just on Saturday night. Here are a few simple ways to bring this message to your family this week.

Kid-friendly translation

Sometimes we feel scared, like when it's dark or when we try something new. But God says, "I am with you." Jesus is always with us, so scared feelings don't get to be the boss. When we keep our eyes on Jesus, He helps us be brave and do the good things He made us to do.

Dinner table prompt

What's one thing you've wanted to try but felt nervous about? What would it look like to do it knowing Jesus is right there with you?

Bedtime question for younger kids

Where is Jesus right now while you're getting ready to sleep? (Right here with me!)

Family challenge

This week, each person picks one "brave step" (try something new, talk to someone new, pray out loud, share about Jesus). Write them on a sticky note on the fridge. Any time someone feels afraid, the family says together, "Eyes on Jesus. He is with me." Celebrate each brave step at dinner.

Verse to memorize together

"When I am afraid, I put my trust in you." Psalm 56:3 (ESV)
